Restless Elizabeth Marshall, September 27, 2024September 27, 2024 It was nearly 10pm, and the squawking would not stop. Looking up into the trees, with a pinch of nighttime sky seeping through the limbs and branches, the noise of the birds fighting rang out loud and clear. They were definitely unhappy about something. “Come inside,” she said. “It’s time for bed.” She cleaned off her desk, switched off all the lamps, and prepared her morning espresso. Life finally seemed manageable. Maybe. ******* 1am arrived, and she was tossing and turning. Unable to settle in, she turned on the light, and climbed out of bed. She grabbed a few melatonin tablets, throwing them back as though they were a shot of whiskey. That should do the job. A few prayers and anxious thoughts later, she was fast asleep. ******* Why am I having so much trouble sleeping? She asked herself. The clock read 5:30am. This is not good. I have to be up in an hour. She flipped the face of her alarm down, and turned over, going back to sleep. ******* The alarm rang out loudly in her ears as she switched it off for the day. She sprang out of bed quickly, threw on her bathrobe, and went into the kitchen to prepare breakfast. I am not going to last the day, she thought to herself. ******* Three naps and four cups of coffee and tea later, she finally sat down to work. Where did my day go? she sighed, as she uttered her fifth plea of the day for God to make her life easy again. A few hundred taps of the keyboard later, a story came into view. Pleased with her progress, she saved her work, and closed the lid of her laptop. “Hey, sweetheart, what do you want to do for dinner?” “Oh…I don’t know, chicken and rice sounds good to me.” “But I don’t have chicken, and I just ordered groceries yesterday. How about we go get teriyaki?” “Oh, okay, I guess.” She picked up her phone for the fiftieth time that day, staring at the clock. Sighing heavily, she leaned back, taking in the peaceful perspective from her back porch. She looked off into the distance, with quiet music dancing between her ears. The treetops swayed in the early autumn breeze, as the sun began to set for the day. I wish everyday could be like this, she thought to herself. I hope it never ends. ******* health and well-being anxiety
